Akibat dari kemarau pada tahun 2013, sejumlah besar ikan kami telah mati. Bagaimanapun terdapat sedikit yang masih hidup telah membesar dan di beri diet baru. Banyak juga yang terencat dan mempunyai kadar tumbuh besar yang perlahan. pada kadar purata ikan ketutu ini mengambil masa lebih dari 36 bulan untuk mencapai kadar 800 gram. Ini adalah ikan ikan yang pada pernhujung musim kemarau tersebut bersais 100gm dan sekarang ada bersais 700-800gm dan purata 500-600gm.

Marble Goby breeding

Since the disastrous dry season of 2013-2014 which could have cost us over RM100 k worth of fish, we have reorganized the management of   hatchery and growth out system. We have also stop other activities ssuch farming shrimp and barramundi. All earthern pond are now use as reservoir of fressh water for the grow out of the marble goby. We stopped all hatchery activities in 2014. Since then we have give more time at improving out nursery and grow out activities.

The dry season of 2014-2015 is shot ie about 3 months and since we  sorted out our fresh water supply management, we do not the same problem that we face previously. We are very cautious of the fresh water supply and noted that we are only running at 50% of our capacity.

The staff spend times at improving the farm and greding the fsih.We still about 5k of fish ranging form 3 inches to 8 inches( about 200 gm ) to care for. All of the brood stock were transfer to another farm and the fish are stock in concrete tank. There are about 80 pieces of high quality brood stock between 250-500gm each with more male than female fish. there are fed trash fish.

In early 2015, we try to breed some fish but its does not go down well. We were using dry hcg mix with oil base lhrha  (ie overprim). These hormone does not mix well. out of two batches of 10 pairs of breeder, only  2 pairs released their eggs and the hatched frys are very weak. The quality of the breeder is poor which contributed to the poor quality fry.

We source out freeze dry lhrha and improve the quality of our breeder and in early May, 2015 we start our breeding program again. In the fish batch of 3 pair of breeders, 2 paird realease large amount of quality egg and we filled up 4 large of these frys. Three weeks latter, another four pairs we given the hormone and 2 pairs responded with good amount of egg and fry which filled up another 6 tanks.

The staff have their hand full in producing live food for the fry, ie rotifer for the first 21 days followed by copepod for the next 21 days and the fry produced on first week of May, 2015 have transformed from larvae into frys with its camouflage color. It will now start feeding on combination of artemia and mosquito larvae.

These fry will be graded at 45 days when they are about 1-1.5 in and will be feed with enriched mosquito larve.

Secara lazimnya warna ikan ketutu akan akan mengikut warna air sekelilingnya. Ketutu Sg Pahang dan Sg Bernam yang selalunya seperti teh susu air adalah kemerahan sementara ikan ketutu dari lombong pasir akan berwarna cerah mengikut warna pasir yang bersih.

Atas kelaziman tersebut, saya telah membuat keputusan untuk mencuba satu persekitaran baru untuk melihat sama ada kelaziman ini adalah benar dengan membuat tong ternakan dalam warna merah hati. Adalah menjadi kelaziman, para pengguna inginkan ikan yang berwarna kemerahan lebih dari ikan yang gelab atau kelabu.

Jadi, sama samalah kita lihat keputusannya selepas dua tahun ikan ini di ternak dalam persekitaran berwarna merah.

Fish frys that just arrived from Sarawak. Per bag there are about 5 kg of frys for a total of 30 kgs. 2 small frys died for a total of less than 50gms. total water weight per bag 1.5-2 kg

ketutu baru sampai

Ini adalah ikan ikan ketutu yang baru sampai dari sungai petani sebanyak 10 kita di kiim melalui bus ekspress. Cara penghantaran ialah mengunakan air yang sedikit dan di campur dengan ubat anti amonia. Semua ikan sampai dalam keadaan segar bugar.Jumlah perjalanan 8 jam termasuk pembungkusan dan sebagai sebagainya. Ikan ini gelap sedikit tetapi akan menjadi cerah selepas di simpan semalam di pejabat kami. Esok saya akan post kan gambar ikan tersebut setelah di simpan semalaman.

marble goby from sarawak

This afternoon I received 25 kg of marble goby from Sarawak complement of my friendly trading partner, Mr Jason Beh.

These gobies came from Sarawak in those paper boxes and plastic bags. The plastic bags are quite loosly packed rather than full of air. Maybe if it its is too full of air, it might busted up when the air plane gets into the sky where the air pressure in the cargo cabin might be very low. The amount of liquid that we found in the plastic bags were merely 2 to 3 percent of the fish weight which is very low. The liquid was a diluted form of anti amonia.

All off the fish got out of the travelling ordeal alive and well. All of them were sold the very evening of it arrival to my office in Petaling Jaya. Hopefully, there will be more coming next week.

Wild versus culture marble goby

The one on the right is wild river marble goby. The weight difference is about 100gm.

These are images of wild and cultured marble goby put side by side for us to make comparison. I can only detect a slide different in the angle of the mounth protrusion where the wild marble goby mouth protruded upward while the culture marble goby protruded forwar. The color differences I believe is a factor of different in water coloration. The mouth of the wild fish is also have shaper angle where else the culture fish have roundish mouth. Is this a gen factor or the wild environment factor.

The cultured fish is from my farm in Sg Petani Kedah while the wild fish is from the Tengi River in northern border of Selangor.
